East Los Angeles is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County with its own Sheriff’s station. If you were hurt in a crash or a fall in East Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department or the California Highway Patrol generally handles the report, and claims against Los Angeles County go to the County Board of Supervisors rather than a city clerk. This page covers both, and how our Los Angeles personal injury attorneys can help.

Getting your collision report

The Sheriff’s East Los Angeles Station, 5019 E. Third Street, (323) 264-4151, lists East Los Angeles among the unincorporated communities it serves (LASD station page). The California Highway Patrol’s East Los Angeles Area office, 1601 Corporate Center Drive in Monterey Park, (323) 980-4600 (CHP office listing), says it serves the unincorporated areas of East Los Angeles and South San Gabriel, and its page mentions Interstates 710, 10 and 5 and State Route 60 (CHP office page). Which agency wrote your report depends on where the crash happened.

CHP reports are requested on form CHP 190.

Filing a claim against Los Angeles County

If a county road, sidewalk or public property defect contributed to your injury, the Board of Supervisors says a signed, written claim goes to Executive Officer, Board of Supervisors, Attention: Claims, 500 W. Temple Street, Room 383, Los Angeles, CA 90012, by mail or in person. The Board’s page states that injury claims must be filed no later than six months after the occurrence (Government Code section 911.2), and it links a claim form (County claims page). Its Claims Unit does not give legal advice and can be reached at 213-974-1440. Some roads in this area are state highways rather than county roads, and other agencies have their own claim rules. If a public entity denies the claim in writing, a lawsuit generally must follow within six months of that notice (Government Code section 945.6). We work out which agency is responsible and prepare the claim.

The East Los Angeles Courthouse

The Los Angeles Superior Court’s East Los Angeles Courthouse is at 4848 East Civic Center Way, Los Angeles, CA 90022. The court’s local Rule 2.2(b) lists it in the Central District (version effective January 1, 2022; Chapter 2). Court rules decide which courthouse hears a personal injury case, and those rules have changed in recent years. If your case goes to court, we handle the filing.

What a East Los Angeles injury claim can cover

How a East Los Angeles personal injury case usually moves

  1. Free consultation. You tell us what happened and we explain your options. There is no attorney fee unless we recover compensation for you.
  2. Investigation. We gather the collision or incident report described above, photos, witness information and your medical records.
  3. Claim and negotiation. We present the claim to the insurance company and negotiate for a fair settlement.
  4. Government claim if needed. If Los Angeles County or another public agency may share responsibility, we prepare the written claim before the six-month deadline.
  5. Lawsuit if needed. If the case does not settle, we file a lawsuit in the proper California Superior Court and keep pushing toward trial.
