Newhall is one of the four towns that make up the City of Santa Clarita, and the California Highway Patrol’s Newhall Area office takes its name from it. If you were hurt in a crash or a fall in Newhall, the report generally comes from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department or the California Highway Patrol, and claims for dangerous streets go to the City of Santa Clarita. This page covers both, and how our Santa Clarita personal injury attorneys can help.

Getting your collision report
The Sheriff’s Santa Clarita Valley Station, 26201 Golden Valley Road, (661) 260-4000, lists Newhall and the City of Santa Clarita among the areas it serves (LASD station page). The California Highway Patrol’s Newhall Area office, 28648 The Old Road in Valencia, (661) 600-1600, patrols freeway and unincorporated roads in the area, including the Interstate 5 and State Route 14 interchange (CHP office page). Which agency wrote your report depends on where the crash happened, and freeway crashes generally go to the CHP.
The CHP Newhall Area patrols a 772-square-mile territory with 204 miles of freeway and 296 miles of unincorporated roadway, and its page names Stevenson Ranch, Castaic, Agua Dulce and Val Verde as unincorporated areas in that territory. Unincorporated areas fall under Los Angeles County rather than the City of Santa Clarita, so where exactly your crash happened decides which agency gets the claim.
- Sheriff’s collision reports: the Sheriff’s Records and Identification Bureau says to call (562) 345-4441 to schedule an in-person pickup or request a mailed copy. Staff first confirm you are eligible to receive the report, and drop-off requests are not accepted (LASD records page).
- By mail: Records and Identification Bureau, Attention: Records Inquiry Non-Law Enforcement Section, 12440 East Imperial Highway, Norwalk, CA 90650. The mail checklist asks for notarized identification. The page lists different suite numbers and office days in different places, so call before you mail anything.
- Incidents from roughly the last six months may also be available from the local station, so call the station first.
CHP reports are requested on form CHP 190.
Filing a claim against the City of Santa Clarita
If a city street, sidewalk or signal defect contributed to your injury, California requires a written claim to the city before a lawsuit can be filed (Government Code section 945.4), and the claim generally must be presented within six months (Government Code section 911.2). Under Government Code section 915, a claim is presented by delivering it to the city clerk, or by mailing it to the clerk or the governing body at its principal office (statute text). The City Clerk’s Office is at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd., Santa Clarita, CA 91355, and the main line is (661) 259-2489. The city’s clerk page does not describe a claims procedure, so call to confirm how the city wants claims submitted before you send anything. If the city denies the claim in writing, a lawsuit generally must follow within six months of that notice (Government Code section 945.6). Roads outside city limits and state highways have different owners and different claim rules, and we work out which agency is responsible.
The Santa Clarita Courthouse
The Los Angeles Superior Court’s Santa Clarita Courthouse is at 23747 West Valencia Boulevard, Santa Clarita, CA 91355. The court’s local Rule 2.2(b) lists it in the North Valley District (version effective January 1, 2022; Chapter 2). Court rules decide which courthouse hears a personal injury case, and those rules have changed in recent years. If your case goes to court, we handle the filing.
What a Newhall injury claim can cover
California law sorts personal injury damages into a few categories:
- Economic damages: objectively verifiable money losses, such as medical expenses, lost earnings and the cost of repairing or replacing property (Civil Code section 1431.2).
- Non-economic damages: subjective losses such as pain, suffering, emotional distress and loss of companionship (same section).
- Punitive damages: available only in limited cases, when it is proven by clear and convincing evidence that the defendant acted with oppression, fraud or malice (Civil Code section 3294).
What a particular claim is worth depends on the injuries, the evidence and the insurance available, so we review each case individually and never promise a result.
How a Newhall personal injury case usually moves
- Free consultation. You tell us what happened and we explain your options. There is no attorney fee unless we recover compensation for you.
- Investigation. We gather the collision or incident report described above, photos, witness information and your medical records.
- Claim and negotiation. We present the claim to the insurance company and negotiate for a fair settlement.
- Government claim if needed. If the City of Santa Clarita or another public agency may share responsibility, we prepare the written claim before the six-month deadline.
- Lawsuit if needed. If the case does not settle, we file a lawsuit in the proper California Superior Court and keep pushing toward trial.
Deadlines and fault rules that apply to every California injury claim
- Two years to file a lawsuit. Most personal injury lawsuits must be filed within two years of the injury under Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1.
- Six months for claims against a public agency. If a city, county or state agency may be responsible, for example because of a dangerous road condition or a government vehicle, a written claim generally must be presented within six months after the claim accrues under Government Code section 911.2. Missing that deadline can end the claim.
- Partly at fault does not mean no recovery. California uses pure comparative fault (Li v. Yellow Cab Co. (1975) 13 Cal.3d 804). If you share some of the blame, your compensation is reduced by your share rather than barred.
